Textbooks are an unavoidable cost while studying 🙁
Hi Awesome people,
I want to let you in a a secret…. ok not really a secret….. but something my sister is doing while she is studying on a budget.
Jekkle is a textbook supply company that lets you rent, buy, or sell textbooks (if you live in Australia).
Amazon also lets you rent textbooks from just about anywhere in the world. If you are from the U.S they even have a two day shipping guarantee, for everyone else shipping is usually about 5-6 days.
Amazon won’t let me rent the text book in my country
No problem! Using a Drop shipping service will let your purchase items from the U.S or the U.K and ship them straight to your door in your home country. 😉 Win at money is a premium partner with borderlinx. Use the promo code RIBH25 to get 25% off shipping fees.
Renting textbooks is a really cost effective way to study! especially considering some textbooks are upwards of $200!
How long do until I have to return the textbook?
The best thing about renting a textbook is that you get to keep it for the whole semester!
Sounds good but I like to write and highlight in my textbooks
No problem! Amazon and Jekkle let you write in pencil and do minimal highlighting in the textbook. It’s just a courtesy to future customers.
What condition will the rented textbook be in?
The textbook will be in good condition. Amazon and Jekkle ask all their customers to return their textbooks the way that they have received them but understand that wear and tear is par for the course.
I hate carrying around big textbooks
Maybe you should try an e-textbook!
An e-textbook is surprisingly very user friendly. The best thing about using an e-textbook instead of a traditional textbook is the have some great “study features”, aka really cool stuff!
- Multi-Color Highlights
- In-app Notebook
- Study anywhere
You can read more about the features here.
But I have already bought my textbooks for this semester!
Don’t worry, both Jekkle and Amazon have options for you 🙂
Which option is the most cost effective?
Well you would have to compare depending on which textbook you need.
Below I have done a comparison between Jekkle and Amazon.
Amazon Hardcover – $251.85
Amazon E-Textbook – $239.25
Jekkle Hardcover – $158.36
Rent Option (2 months)
Amazon Hardcover – $39.84
Amazon e-textbook – $112.48
Jekkle Hardcover – $23.85
Amazon – $122.71 (Gift Card)
Jekkle – $120.00 (Cash Money)
Conclusion – As you can see from our example you would be better to rent the hardcover from Jekkle for $23.85.
The other option would be to buy the text book from Jekkle for $158.36 and then sell the textbook back for $120.00. This option would leave you with a cost of $38.36.
If you are planning on selling a textbook that you have are using it is important to put your textbook up for sale as soon as you are finished with it.
Textbooks are updated with new versions regularly. If your textbook is the latest version, you will sell it quicker.
Both Amazon and Jekkle offer a buy back price depending on the version and demand for the textbook.
So don’t be lazy and sell it as soon as you are finished your course!
The longer you wait, the less you make 😉
Next time when looking to buy a new textbook consider buying it online or renting it for the duration of your course.
It will be cheaper and more cost effective for a student on a budget.
